If you’ve ever picked up a store-bought hair gel and flipped over the bottle, you’ll have noticed a long list of hard-to-pronounce ingredients. Many of these are there to extend shelf life or create texture, but the downside is they can leave hair dry, weighed down, or even contribute to scalp irritation. That’s why I love this simple DIY flaxseed hair gel, made with just a handful of natural ingredients, it nourishes your hair while giving it light, flexible hold

Why Flaxseeds for Hair Gel?

Flaxseeds are rich in:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids → strengthen hair follicles and encourage growth.

  • Vitamin E → adds shine and protects against oxidative stress.

  • Natural mucilage (the gel-like substance that forms when boiled) → defines curls and locks in moisture without stiffness.

This combination makes flaxseed gel especially wonderful for curly, wavy, or frizz-prone hair.

Why Add Essential Oils?

Essential oils don't just add a beautiful aroma, research shows they have incredible benefits for your hair & scalp health too. Some oils you can try in this recipe:

  • Rosemary essential oil → known to support thicker, fuller hair by stimulating circulation to the scalp.

  • Patchouli essential oil → grounding, earthy, and deeply moisturising—great for scalp dryness and adding shine.

  • Cedarwood essential oil → helps balance oil production and may reduce hair thinning by creating a healthier scalp environment.

  • Lavender → soothing for the scalp, reduces dryness or itching, and supports overall hair health while adding a calming aroma.

  • Peppermint → cooling and invigorating, helps stimulate circulation and leaves a fresh, clean feel on the scalp.

  • Geranium → balances oil production, supports scalp health, and promotes shiny, soft strands.

Common Ingredients to Avoid in Hair Gels

Conventional gels often contain harsh chemicals that can build up on the scalp and weaken your hair over time. Here are a few to watch out for:

  • Drying alcohols (like SD Alcohol or Isopropyl Alcohol): create stiffness but strip natural oils, leading to brittle hair.

  • Synthetic polymers (PVP, carbomers): give “hold” but leave behind a sticky residue and can suffocate the scalp.

  • Artificial fragrance: a common source of irritation, allergies, and hidden hormone-disrupting chemicals (phthalates).

  • Parabens & formaldehyde releasers: used as preservatives, but linked to hormone disruption and scalp sensitivity.

Choosing a DIY option means you skip the questionable additives and nourish your hair with natural goodness instead.

The DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel Recipe

You’ll need:

  • 1.5 cups water

  • 3 tablespoons flaxseeds

  • Essential oils (5-10 drops in total)

Method:

  1. Bring the water to a boil, add flaxseeds, and stir.

  2. Simmer until the mixture becomes frothy and thick, then remove from heat.

  3. Strain immediately through a fine strainer or cheesecloth.

  4. Stir in essential oils while still warm but not hot.

  5. Store in a clean glass jar or container.

Storage Notes

Because this recipe is water-based and contains no preservatives, it’s best to make small batches. Keep your gel in the fridge and use within about one week.

If you’d like to extend its shelf life, you can add a natural preservative (such as Leucidal or Geogard) at around 1% of your total recipe weight. Without it, always make fresh and keep chilled.

Why You’ll Love This Gel

  • Lightweight hold without flakes or crunch

  • Doubles as a scalp-nourishing treatment

  • 100% natural, safe, and customisable with oils you love

  • Inexpensive to make and replenishes quickly
