Oil Pulling with Essential Oils

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice which involves swishing oil around in your mouth. It is known to have incredible benefits for our oral and overall health. The idea is that by pulling the oil back & forth through your mouth, it will help to draw out the toxins that have built up, kill bacteria, support healthy gums and whiten teeth.

Common oils used for oil pulling include sesame oil, olive oil and my personal favourite, coconut oil. Adding doTERRA essential oils to your oil is an amazing way to enhance the benefits of your oil pulling practice.

WHY OIL PULLING?

Oil pulling has been known to have incredible benefits for our oral & overall health. Here is an extract taken from an article by Dr Axe which highlights some of the many reasons why oil pulling is regaining it's popularity.

"Oil pulling works by cleaning (detoxifying) the oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. It literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates a clean, antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that’s needed to prevent cavities and disease.

This unbelievably effective procedure has been used for centuries as a traditional India remedy to:

  • Treat tooth decay

  • Kill bad breath

  • Heal bleeding gums

  • Prevent heart disease

  • Reduce inflammation

  • Whiten teeth

  • Soothe throat dryness

  • Prevent cavities

  • Heal cracked lips

  • Boost the immune system

  • Improve acne

  • Strengthen gums and jaws"

HOW TO OIL PULL:

1. First thing in the morning (before consuming any food or drink) put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth

2. Swish the oil mixture for 10-20 minutes, pulling it back and forth between your teeth

3. Afterwards, spit out the oil and rinse your mouth thoroughly

4. Repeat daily or every second day

20 minutes can seem like a really long time. Start off with smaller amounts and work your way up as it becomes part of your routine. I like to do my oil pulling while I am doing other morning tasks, such as showering or making breakfast for my daughter. The time goes faster than you'd think!

ADDING ESSENTIAL OILS:

There are many doTERRA essential oils that can be added to make your oil pulling practice even more effective. Some of my favourite's include: Peppermint, Tea Tree, Oregano, On Guard, Clove, Lemon. These are oils that all have amazing properties that support our oral health.

Either add 1-2 drops of essential oil to your tablespoon of oil, or make up a bigger batch by filling a jar with your oils mix (I do 10-20 drops per half cup of oil). When using hot oils such as Oregano, I recommend using a bit less than you normally would.
