Essential Oils Basics

Essential Oils 101

I'm not ashamed to say I have become a crazy oil lady. I live them, every moment of every day. The way they have enriched my life is truly astounding, and I want to share that with you

If you are new to essential oils, then start here and get acquainted. If you have questions or want to know more, please reach out, because this is a topic I am dying to chat with you about!

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts from plants, they are 50-70 times more potent than herbs. (Did you know 1 drop of peppermint oil is the equivalent of 28 cups of peppermint tea? WOAH!). Essential oils are defence mechanism for plants and cells and can be used for a myriad of wellness benefits, from emotional and hormonal wellness, to immunity, digestive, and respiratory support. From beauty and skin, to detoxifying your home. Essential oils can do it all.

When it comes to purchasing essentials oils that you are going to use in your home, in your health and on your family, it is so important to remember that not all essential oils are created equally. Certified Pure Tested Grade essential oils are the only way to go. This is why I am so passionate about doTERRA: Their oils are the highest possible quality, and there are no synthetics, no fillers, no pesticides, no alcohol, no fragrances. They are just 100% pure essential oil.

Not only this, but doTERRA source their oils ethically, sustainably in collaboration with farmers all across the world (find out more about their co-impact sourcing model).

How can I use essential oils in my life?

AROMATICALLY

Did you know? Our sense of smell is a tool that can have powerful physiologic, mental, and emotional responses. This is because when Essential oils are inhaled, they quickly absorbed by the smell receptors, which have a direct link to the limbic system. The limbic system is part of the brain that controls our moods, emotions, behaviour, and memory.

Some essential oils induce uplifting or invigorating effects, while others are more calming. Using your essential oils diffuser is one of the best ways for using essential oils aromatically.

You can achieve the same health benefits by simply placing a drop or two of essential oil in the palm of your hand, rubbing your hands together and then cupping them around your nose while you inhale.

Additional aromatic uses For Essential Oils Include:

  • Apply oil to a cotton ball or wooden peg and place in the air vents of your vehicle

  • Mix oils in a spray bottle with water and mist over furniture, carpet, or linens

  • Add a drop to the bottom of your pillow before sleep

  • Wear diffuser jewellery

TOPICALLY

Topical application is another effective method for experiencing the benefits of essential oils. Because they have low molecular weights and are lipid soluble, they easily penetrate the skin. Once absorbed, they stay in the applied area for a localised benefit.

When applied topically, just one drop has the ability to enter the bloodstream within 30 seconds, reach your brain in 2 minutes and service every cell in your body within 22 minutes. Amazing, huh?

Beneficial areas you can apply essential oils include neck, temples, chest, arms, legs and soles of feet.

Other Effective Methods of Topical Application

  • Add a few drops of oil to a warm bath

  • Make a hot or cold compress by soaking a towel or cloth in water, adding essential oils, and then applying to the desired area

  • Add oil to a lotion or moisturiser and then apply to skin

Remember to avoid sensitive areas such as eyes and inner ears. See information below for SAFE DILUTION RATIOS.

FOOD FLAVOURING

That's right! Many of doTERRA's essential oils are actually food grade, which means we can enjoy the magic of using them in the kitchen! The most important thing to remember when it comes using essential oils as food flavouring is to always read the label. If it is safe to use, the label will read "Directions: For food flavouring."

When using essential oils in the kitchen, only use a tiny bit (remember: 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea!). They are potent! 1 drop is usually sufficient.

The best thing about using essential oils in the kitchen is that we not only get to experience the amazing flavour, but always all the incredible wellness benefits they have to offer.

Hot Tip: For more potent oils, it may be better to administer them by toothpicks (dip the end of a clean toothpick into the oil and then add to the food) rather than drops

Safe Dilution

When using your essential oils topically, it is important to always remember to dilute using a carrier oil. This won’t reduce the effectiveness of the oils, however it will reduce any possibly skin sensitivity, reduce evaporation, help the essential oils to absorb quicker and help to carrying them throughout our body.

We generally recommend using Fractionated Coconut Oil (that's a type of coconut oil that has the high-chain fats removed, it doesn't solidify). A Fractionated Coconut Oil (or FCO), is light, non-greasy and easily absorbed into our bodies, making it ideal for carrying essential oils.

Other alternatives for carrier oils include rose-hip, jojoba, sweet almond and apricot kernel oils.

RECOMMENDED DILUTION RATIOS

Adults: 5 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil

Children: 2-3 drops of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil

Babies: 1 drop of essential oil per 10ml of carrier oil
